Public Safety OS: built for when failure is not an option

In Public Safety, technology simply has to work. There is no room for delay, uncertainty or system failure. Many emergency services still rely on standard operating systems in their vehicles, even though these systems were never designed for mission-critical environments. This often leads to instability, complex update procedures and manual interventions in the field, increasing the risk during critical operations. That is why we developed our own solution: Public Safety OS.

Built for mission-critical environments

Public Safety OS is built specifically for police, fire and ambulance operations. Not as a generic platform, but as a controlled and reliable software environment for critical applications in the field.

In critical moments, the system must work reliably without causing delays or disruption to the response.

Public Safety OS operates reliably in the background, without requiring interaction from emergency responders. This helps ensure continuity across all operations.

Security and stability by design

Public Safety OS is developed to minimise risk and ensure continuous operation, even under pressure.

Built-in security

Security is integrated at every level of the system:

  • Atomic updates ensure updates are either fully completed or not applied at all, preventing unstable system states
  • A read-only core filesystem protects the foundation of the OS, even in case of a breach
  • SELinux adds strict access control, limiting the impact of potential exploits
  • Containerisation ensures applications run in a predictable and stable way, independent of the underlying operating system

This reduces the attack surface while improving control and reliability in the field.

Stable and predictable performance

Consistency and reliability are key in Public Safety environments:

  • Software is deployed in a standardised and reproducible way across systems
  • Updates are validated in a lab environment before going live
  • Minimal-downtime roll-outs allow updates without interrupting running applications

Applications continue to behave consistently, even after updates, ensuring operations are not disrupted.

The result is a system that remains stable, predictable and available when it matters most.

Built on open standards

Public Safety OS is based on Fedora, which is closely aligned with the Red Hat ecosystem. This provides a strong and future-proof foundation, supported by widely adopted open standards.

This foundation also supports long-term reliability and maintainability in Public Safety environments.

The Dutch government has a long-standing focus on the use of open standards and open-source software. Red Hat plays an important role in this by supporting enterprise-grade open-source solutions and contributing to globally used technologies.

This aligns well with the direction of public sector IT, where transparency, sustainability and long-term support are key.

Efficient, scalable and cost-effective

Managing ICT across multiple vehicles often involves complex deployments, manual updates and ad-hoc fixes, making it difficult to maintain consistency and control. Public Safety OS helps simplify this by creating a more standardised, scalable and manageable software environment.

A single software image can be deployed across multiple vehicles, ensuring consistency across systems. Security patches and updates can be rolled out quickly, without risking instability.

This reduces manual intervention, limits the need for on-site support and minimises downtime and unexpected maintenance. The result is a more predictable ICT environment with a lower total cost of ownership over time.

One integrated solution

At Intemo, hardware and software are developed together.

Public Safety OS is designed to work seamlessly with our vehicle hardware solutions. This ensures full control over performance, integration and reliability, from deployment to ongoing support.

Everything is aligned to keep your operation running.
