Joris Vissers | Fleet Manager | Gelderland-Midden Safety and Health Region (VGGM)
Reliable vehicle ICT for ambulances
As an ambulance driver and fleet manager, Joris Vissers experiences daily the importance of reliable vehicle ICT for the deployability of ambulance care. He drives on the road himself, but is also responsible for ICT in the ambulances in the Gelderland-Midden Safety and Health Region (VGGM). In this capacity, he works with Intemo, which supplies and supports vehicle ICT. “If something doesn’t work
When every minute counts
VGGM relies heavily on vehicle ICT for the daily deployment of ambulances. Navigation, trip information and the link to the control room ensure focus among drivers and nurses, on the road and with the patient.
If a system fails, you can improvise, but that is something you would obviously want to avoid during an (emergency) call out. That means manual navigation and extra coordination with colleagues, while traffic congestion has only increased. “In our work, you want minimum deviation from what you are used to,” says Joris. “Everything that runs differently creates extra tension.” So, vehicle ICT is not a luxury for VGGM, but a basic necessity. Reliable systems bring peace of mind, give drivers and nurses confidence in their working methods and allow them to stay focused even under high pressure. “The more predictable and stable the technology, the better you can do your job.”
An objective choice with immediate impact
As a government organisation, VGGM is obliged to procure vehicle ICT through a tender process. In that process, Intemo came out on top, based on predetermined requirements and weighting. “You shouldn’t go for the cheapest, but for the best,” says Joris. “Especially in an environment where reliability plays such an important role.”

Technology in reliable hands
Intemo supplies VGGM with the hardware that is built into the ambulances: rugged vehicle computers with touchscreen, including associated components such as cabling and antennas. Vehicles require technology that can withstand vibration, temperature changes and intensive use.
The navigation and control room links operate through specialised software partners. It is precisely at that interface that things can get complex: a failure can be caused by hardware, software or the integration between them. “You then need a partner like Intemo that doesn’t avoid the issue but helps to quickly identify where the problem really lies.”
Working together under pressure
Because Intemo is one party for all hardware in the ambulances, Joris knows exactly where to turn. “If there is a problem, I contact my regular contact Maarten. In most cases, it is quickly resolved. And otherwise, I can fall back on the service desk.” One point of contact saves him a lot of phone calls and time. This became especially apparent when multiple parties were involved in one problem. Suppliers pointed at each other and the problem persisted. Intemo took the initiative, brought everyone together at the table and got it resolved.
Security when it matters
Every day, VGGM works in situations where you need to be able to rely on technology. In that context, Joris is not looking for a supplier that can tell a good story, but a partner who delivers and stays put when things get difficult. Intemo is a good fit: experienced, stable and used to critical environments. Or as Joris himself puts it: “Reliable, solid and a good partner to work with. Just what you need when the situation requires it.”
